James Reid, Graphic Designer: SPB Design Team Member/Chiang Mai

My name is James Reid, 27, from Wales, UK. I studied a BA Hons and an MA Hons in Graphic Communications at Glamorgan University. After graduating I spent some time on work placements, freelancing, entering design competitions and finally a permanent position in a design studio as a print designer. After a year I became bored with the routine and wanted to find a new challenge, something that would further my development as a graphic designer and increase my knowledge in other areas of design.

I decided to apply for a design job in another country as I thought this would fulfill my expectations and give me a new perspective and experience of working life. I had always wanted to visit Thailand so this was my first choice and as you can imagine I was delighted to receive a reply from Spb Software House, Chiang Mai. I immediately started to research the company and was very impressed with its client base and award winning work.

I swiftly began to arrange my departure and arrived in Chiang Mai in September 2007.

During my short time here I can say that I have found my challenge…

The first project I was given was to design a new Spb Time skin theme. This involved working to a small scale, using pixels, which straight away was something new for me. This project was very challenging as I had to not only think of the design elements but also functionality and usability of the application.

While working within this specialist area of design, one has to think ahead all the time and take into
account the creative and industrial needs of the product one is designing for. Keeping up to date with the continuously forward moving market and staying ahead of it is one of the main issues we are faced with.

Work in general at Spb is enjoyable as it never stays the same for too long, one week you could be designing a set of Icons for one of Spb’s applications and the next, large scale vector artwork ready for print. There are many areas of work within Spb and all employees have the opportunity to change tasks and learn new skills along the way. The Spb design team also takes time out to research new products and Software, generate new ideas and develop existing concepts for usability, functionality and style of Spb applications.

This varied schedule of work creates a good atmosphere within the studio and allows team members to work closely and productively together. The amount of diverse work being produced here means that Spb needs employees with new ideas, various skills and great personal qualities, each bringing something new to the table.

I feel that Spb is a great place to work for any designer who feels he or she would like to gain experience within a unique area of design and also develop their skills in other areas including print, web, motion, and 3D.

SPB is an International, award winning, forward thinking company, leading the way in pocket PC software
